Quilting Color Theory: How to Build a Sustainable Stash

Class Length: 2 hours

Class Cost: $45

Are Materials Included? Yes. Materials are provided by Hoop & Bee for this class.

Class Description: Have a quilt pattern you love but feel stuck on choosing fabrics for it? Not sure how to make it feel “cozy”? Not even sure what colors are “cozy”? Or maybe your stash is overflowing with impulse buys that don’t quite fit your projects.

In Color Theory for Stash Building with Rachael Frank, we’ll explore the art and science behind color selection that will help you confidently curate a stash based on your personal style and aesthetic, allowing you to make quilts that feel cohesive and intentional–and we’ll practice ways to use up those random, weird, or never clicked for you fabrics you’ve been holding on to.

Through hands-on exercises and group discussion, you’ll learn key principles of color theory—like contrast, balance, and harmony—and discover why certain colors and prints work well together and why some just don’t. Together we’ll:

  • work on developing (or identifying) your personal, “signature” color palette that you can always fall back on when a pattern has you stumped;

  • practice capturing specific vibes;

  • practice working with “difficult” prints (like stripes or directional prints);

  • pick some fabrics for an actual project you’re working on.

This class is perfect for quilters looking to build a sustainable, usable fabric stash and develop their eye for color. Whether you’re mixing prints, creating mood through color, or planning your next project, the tools you’ll gain will help you shop smarter and quilt with purpose.

If you already feel like a master of color selection with years of quilting experience, this class may not be the right fit. This is a space to grow your skills and expand your creative horizons. Instead, consider a quilt-along to showcase your expertise and create something extraordinary!

Additionally, participants with color vision deficiencies are welcome, though please note that the class heavily focuses on color perception, and the instructor may not be able to provide specific accommodations for these needs.

This class will run with 2+ participants.

PLEASE NOTE: While we will be using fabric, this is NOT a project based class, so we won’t be completing a specific item. This class is focused on you learning new methods to build your overall maker skills and increase your confidence in fabric selection.

If you’re seeking a lesson on how to make a specific item, please check our other classes or get in touch for a private lesson.
