Intro to Improv Quilting
Class Length: 8 classes, 2hrs/ea
Class Cost: $125
Are Materials Included? While some materials will be provided by the instructor, students are encouraged to bring mixed materials they already own such as worn out clothing or garments, towels, old blankets, or other inherited fabric such as silk, knit, wool, flannel, denim, etc., to use to create a deeply personal, sustainable piece.
Class Description: Taught by Guest Instructor Sarah King, in this 8 session class students will learn about the varied histories of improvising in quilt making, discover what methods work best with their unique creative personality, and then apply what they learn to create a wall hanging or lap quilt, using a combination of hand and machine sewing and working through every key step of making a quilted piece from beginning to end including cutting fabric to piecing to quilting and finally binding.
Quilting is as much about the process as it is about the finished quilt. It is an exercise in exploring one's relationship to navigating entropy: finding narrative and pattern in chaos. Playing with how many possibilities and pieces and colors and textures are before you and empowering oneself to make decisions and be flexible to change.
This class will run with 2+ participants.
PLEASE NOTE: While no experience is necessary, if you have never used a sewing machine before and are feeling nervous or stressed about using one for the first time, please consider taking our Sewing Machine Confidence Builder prior to this class, or get in touch for a private one-on-one lesson.
